Stratovarius成立于1984年，由三个来自芬兰、赫尔辛基的三个年轻人组成，他们分别是鼓手兼主唱Tuomo Lassila，贝斯手John Vihervaauml以及吉他手Staffan Straaringahlman。在他们正式取名为Stratovarius之前这三人以Black Water的名字对外演出。
